VBL++, LPOM, and the National Ignition Facility
Event
The National Ignition Facility is home to the most energetic laser on the planet and the highest yield inertial confinement fusion experiments to date. Behind such a massive engineering feat lies a myriad of physical and computational tools. The Laser Performance and Operations model, is the core of NIF measurement reporting, signal processing, shot planning, and trend analysis. At it’s heart is the comprehensive optical modeling engine Virtual Beam Line. Through this talk we’ll explore NIF and its broad accomplishments, tour the vast labyrinth of LPOM, and delve into VBL++, the modern parallelized update to the classic engine. I’ll describe a few of the projects I’ve led to develop and integrate new models and features into this code base as well as project the future goals and aspirations for this software.
