A New Perspective on Epidemics
Series: Graduate Student Colloquium
Location: Math 501
Presenter: Bill Fries, University of Arizona

In this talk, I will introduce mathematical epidemiology at a microscopic and macroscopic level. I will discuss the traditional approaches to analyzing and understanding epidemics spread and follow this with our new perspective: the Incidence v. Cumulative Cases (ICC) Curve. This perspective, born out of a nonlinear transformation, offers better statistical properties than traditional approaches, thus, allowing us to perform better inference and giving us the potential to detect when epidemic properties have changed. This will culminate in exploring COVID-19 data and discussing whether our novel approach can quantify the effects of government action and other collective behavior phenomena.
