Culturally Responsive Mathematics in Tucson Unified School District
Series: Mathematics Instruction Colloquium
Location: MATH 401
Presenter: Steven Martinez, Tucson Unified School District
Years ago, TUSD developed a framework to articulate culturally responsive instruction through the acronym SPARKS (Student Centered, Positive learning communities, Academic and ethnic identity, development through relevant content integration, Rigor through critical thinking, Knowledge co-creation and Social Justice/civic engagement). In 2019, Rodrigo Gutierrez trained secondary math teacher leaders to train their math departments in what culturally responsive mathematics looks like in the secondary level. This year, five algebra 1 teachers in 4 TUSD schools are piloting a culturally responsive algebra class. In this session, we will go over culturally responsive mathematics and work out a lesson we used this month with our students.
